My First Photography Show!!!

It's my very first Photography Show! Friday, October 13 from 5pm-9pm. Located at the SoCo Lounge at 1st & Detroit. Here is a series of photographs from my week at the International Retreat for White Crane Silat. I have combined the detail shots to make it more interesting to view so many detail shots. Most of the shots are taken on walks in the area surrounding the Retreat center in El Collel, Catalonia; the very north portion of Spain in the foothills of the Pyranee mountains.
Photographs have become a sort of journal of my days and I especially enjoy taking macro abstracts of the things of beauty that surround me.

White Crane Silat - International Retreat 2006 - Spain

I have finally returned after 2 weeks away from my home and family. So where did I go? What did I do?

I did manage to do some sightseeing and I will post my tourist pics at a later date, but the majority of my trip was participating in the International Retreat for White Crane Silat. I was immersed in an International community of dynamic and interesting people tied together soley by their practice of White Crane Silat, an Indonesian Martial Art.

There were approximately 120 participants. We were divided into 4 groups and worked out for 2 to 3 hours at a stretch. There were a variety of abilities and levels; a range of ages, several languages and a roller coaster of emotions.

We were nestled into the foothills of the Pyranee mountains and enjoyed majestic views in between workouts.

In between sessions, in sweltering heat, I often took walks to enjoy my surroundings.

I really love the light in this photo. I also enjoy macros with a shallow depth of field.

Simply a spider mum from the grocery store. And yet it inspires and calms me.

I captured this with the blur. A little color touchup in Photoshop, but the blur is from the original photo.

I'm way into blurry photos just now. Maya calls them "Christy's Mysteries"

60 mile an hour winds!

I've been super busy lately with less time to photograph just for the meditative beauty of it. But this past Saturday I spent 2 hours recording the beauty around me. It was a windy day with gusts up to 60 mph. So many of the photos have a motion to them. There were moments of stillness too.

Just like in Charlotte's Web, the crickets are singing the end of summer every night. Although it's still unbearably hot, one can feel summer coming to an end. The school year is getting ready to start. There is hustle and bustle and new schedules to adjust to. I am feeling a surge in creativity, but have yet to reharness my organized self. I am working on being the best me I can be. Here's a recent photo. I am at such a crossroads with photography. Today is a beginning. Who knows where the changes will lead me? Here's a summer blossom from our backyard. Chris's grandma says these flowers are called "Naked Ladies."

Just a quick post to show off one of Maya's new amazing works of art. She drew this picture for her Aunt Casey. It's Casey holding up a quilt that Grandma made for her. She's surrounded by Grandma's dogs. I'm so proud! Look at the detail and the recurring pattern in the quilt. I'm beaming. She's not even six yet!!!!!!!

But since Maya (now almost 6) was very small, I have been creating collages out of her art work. I almost always create the collages as gifts for the small children of friends and family. The girls and I went to the Zoo on Saturday. We had a great time. I took tons of colorful, happy photos. I am longing for a higher quality camera and a zoom lens! Here is an adorable capture of Ella waving to the train. I took a whole series that includes no train, the engine, the people, etc. But I especially enjoy this capture for all the passengers looking at adorable Ella waving back at them.

I've gone from nothing to do (except be distracted by kids and hubby) from far more than I can actually manage. But I love it that way! I have several new art forms emerging at the moment. I am flush with creativity. I wanted to make mention of the fact that I upload small files of my photos and art to this site. I store higher resolution images on my computer for selling prints. Just thought I'd mention.

I sat beneath the wise, old Channing tree today. The soft temperate breezes brushed againt my face and through my hair, as I sat dappled in sun light. I was so thankful to be among the mothers again. One week away from my routine seemed a life time. But I have found enough mental space and pleasantry to renew my spirit. At least through dinner. I sprang to loving myself and my family through the physical care of my home. A well-oiled machine that offers peace. Thank you blessed FLYLady. You have given to me, my very best self and I appreciate you for that.

I just submitted two photo essays to the members art showing at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church at 30th and Peoria. There will be an opening this Thursday, March 24 at 5:30pm. I saw a few of the other pieces. It should be a very diverse and interesting exhibit. It runs until April sometime.

I have been in the moment for a good week plus now. I don't mean in the zen spiritual sense that is good for you though I make brief strides to that altitude of thinking. No, I've been in the moment out of necessity. Ella got a little under the weather. Her needs brought me face to face with now, in the moment. Children, especially small children take us there, to the moment. They boil away everything else to its very essence. Their immediate physical needs and the exponential flurry of details you conquer to get there, with kindness, with healing tenderness, are the moment. You have no choice but to handle things. There is no entertainment, no interpersonal drama; there is only the moment. In our need, there is blessing.

Spring, glorious spring. The birds are chirping. Flowers and trees are budding. There is color in the world again! I have been averaging 400 photos a day. I had slowed down during the winter dull gray monotony. I am rejuvenated.
